Hebrews Chapter 1

Expositional Commentary

Yeshua IS our Eternal Creator-God!

1:1

This letter was written to the Messianic Jews (Hebrews). The introduction’s immediate focus is God. God spoke in various ways, by audible language, dreams, visions, etc. to reveal Himself and His Truth to the prophets and leaders (Fathers) and to believers in past history. This authenticates that the Bible was written by God; and is therefore True and Accurate. God, the Holy Spirit, inspired the hearts and minds of those whom He instructed to write down His revelation of Himself and Truth. We, as True Believers in Jesus Christ, know and fervently believe God’s Word is absolutely True. God is Truth, and He cannot lie; thus we have the assurance that all the Bible is True!

1:2

Now the author shifts to the present time: Now God (Adonai) has spoken to us by His Son, (Jesus), Whom He has declared to us IS His Son! Notice that immediately the contrast is made between old testament prophets, rulers, etc. to God’s very own Son. To further demonstrate that Jesus is God, the writer states that He (Jesus) created the entire Universe and all life! This Truth is absolute proof that Jesus is God! Thus if Jesus created everything, He obviously owns everything; all Creation belongs to Jesus; including you and me!

1:3

This Son is the radiance of God. It is literally rendered as the Shkhinah Glory of God. Jesus is God’s Divine Presence, Light Itself; clearly being God Himself. This Shkhinah Glory of Light was so brilliant that one could not look upon it directly. When old Testament believers saw God, they actually saw a glimpse of The Glory of God, this intensely brilliant Light. Further, the writer states, with a strong conviction of Truth, that The Son, Jesus, IS the exact perfect Image of God’s Nature. This Son is the One who upholds, maintains, guides, directs and powers the entire Universe by His mighty Word of Power. He Himself had offered Himself as the sacrifice to accomplish our cleansing of sins and deliverance of all guilt. He, Jesus, then sat down at the right hand of the Divine Majesty on high. This denotes a position of Honor and Power with God. Jesus serves as Prophet, King and Priest, being far superior to anyone who ever lived or served in any of these positions. There is no stronger way to describe Jesus, Yeshua, as God Himself.

1:4

Just in case we have somehow missed the clear meaning, the writer goes on to state that He is made so much better than the angels; even though, for a little while, He was made lower than the angels. Yet, Jesus is far above them all. All through the old and new Testaments it is clear that the entire Bible is written to reveal Jesus as the King Messiah, Creator and Ruler of the Universe, Savior of the entire World, and Eternal God forever. Even Jesus said “All of Scripture speaks of me.”

1:5

Think about it, has God ever called an angel “His Son”? (Ps. 2:7, 2Sam. 7:14; 1Cor. 9:4-10, Gal. 3:1-5) The Jews regarded angels as the most exalted of all God’s creatures. God firmly establishes the Truth that Jesus is His Only Begotten Son, God Himself. All this clearly shows that no angel could ever, ever hope to be like God. Even today, “angelology,” is being professed as a form of “religion”. Remember, Satan, a fallen angel, would like to be God, but he cannot. Satan tries to deceive foolish people to be “their own god”, yet they cannot. Those who reject Jesus as Creator, Lord, God and Savior have put themselves in the horrible position of being their own god. If you are your own god, you are in for a horrible, tortuous existence, forever!

1:6-7

Jesus is identified as ‘God’s Firstborn Son’, and is to be worshiped by all His angels. The “Firstborn position” was always a position of high honor. Because of the Jews high regard of angels, we often see old Testament prophets fall down to worship angels; yet, in every single case, the angels tell them NOT to worship them, to worship God only. We are to understand that angels are a very powerful group of beings that are to serve God. God assigns angels to assist us as ministering Spirits. There are ranks of angels, and specific angels are to perform specific tasks assigned by God. Angels have specific characteristics and can assume all kinds of forms and appearances. The writer carefully selects seven Old Testament verses (see the last page) to prove that Jesus is superior to angels. We, and they, are being warned that even angels who chose to disobey God and turn to Pride, becoming selfish, will be destroyed in the Lake that burns with fire. (Mt. 25:41) (7.) Angels serve so powerfully they would be as ‘fiery flames’ and as ‘ the winds’; both powerful, yet invisible.

1:8

Then he immediately contrasts the angels with the Son. (This is again a definite style and contrast that is used by Paul in stating the fundamental truth of an argument). “Your Throne, O God, is forever; and the scepter of Your Kingdom is a scepter of absolute righteousness.” This is a quotation from Psalm 45, which clearly shows the Deity of the Son of God. In Isaiah 9:6-7, the scriptures speak of His Eternal reign. Even Mary was promised in Luke 1:33, that His throne shall be established forever. Numerous other scriptures state that the Rulership and Throne of The Son of God would be Eternal.

1:9

“You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity.” This is so strong as to be a constant state of one’s nature; meaning ALWAYS loving righteousness, virtue, integrity and uprightness in purpose, thought and action; hating lawlessness, injustice, any type of evil. The Nature of God is always righteous and good; hating all evil. As believers, we are to pray that our very nature and character would love righteousness and hate evil with every part of our being. “Therefore”, (whenever we see this Word, we should pay close attention to the reasons it is given). “God has anointed You with the oil of extreme joy and gladness above and far beyond Your companions.” (Again see Ps. 45: 6,7.) These Messianic quotations reveal that Jesus is indeed God’s Beloved Son. It is interesting that this Psalm also refers to a King’s wedding; a reminder that we are the Bride of Christ.

1:10

You Lord, created the Earth in the beginning, and the Heavens, (meaning the entire Universe), are also the work of Your Hands. This quotation is from Psalm 102. Note that the writer clearly links the Creation of the entire Universe to the God of the Universe; the God-head; Father, Son and Spirit. Those who foolishly believe the lie of evolution, are, in fact, denying the Truth of the Creation of the entire Universe by the Triune God.

1:11-12

The Earth and Heavens will someday perish, yet You, God, will remain steadfast and true forever. The entire Universe will deteriorate and burn up or disintegrate, or wear out; (Isaiah 51:6) just like a garment of clothing becomes worn out and eventually disintegrates. So our current Earth and the Universe will someday completely vanish. We are told that it will “burn up” and be utterly destroyed. Jesus promises that He will create a New Heaven and a New Earth for us. (Rev. 21:1,5) These will again be Perfect, just as they were in the beginning, before sin entered the world. Note, also, that Jesus has promised that all True Believers will be clothed with a new, perfect and beautiful (or handsome) body that will never suffer pain or sorrow and will never wear out or get old! Our current “reality” is caught in a time-space warp. We will be “outside of time” in eternity. This is a difficult concept, yet quantum physicists already know that there is ‘matter’ or ‘substance’ that is beyond our ability to understand. Our very sun is made up of ‘substances’ or ‘random particles’ (these ‘random particles’ are identified as ‘Plasma’) that scientists do not understand! Now many scientists believe that the sun is actually Plasma! We now know that matter exits in at least four forms: Solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. (Curious? Ask to see our DVD!)

1:13

The climatic question the writer asks is: To which angel did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool”? Of course, the answer is absolutely none! No angel has ever been given the honor of sitting at God’s right hand, and certainly not been promised that all enemies would be subjected to him! Only God Himself could fulfill that position. Jesus Himself used this same quotation to confound and silence the Pharisees, when He questioned them about the Messiah (Christ), asking them “Whose Son is He?” When they said “David’s”, Jesus questioned them further, by asking them how David, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, called Him (The Messiah) My Lord, saying: ‘My Lord, sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet’?! They could not answer! ( see Mt. 22:42-46)

1:14

Then the writer summarizes the purpose and plan God had set in motion for the angels: That they would all be ministering spirits, (servants) sent out into the world in the service of God for the purpose of assisting all those humans who were to inherit Salvation! Think of it, the angels were created by God, to glorify God by serving and assisting those of us who have been chosen, by the Grace of God, to become His beloved children for all eternity! Have you thanked God for the angels He has so graciously sent on your behalf? Have you glorified and praised God for the many time His angels have assisted you? Certainly we do not worship angels, yet we can be thankful for them. Some of us have had our very lives saved by God’s angels!

The Truth is Jesus, (Yeshua in Hebrew) IS the promised Messiah (Christ) and God. He came to save all those who would receive Him; both Jews and Gentiles. Ponder, and pray over these powerful Truths that have been graciously revealed to us. How are you changing your own attitude and thinking? Remember, this ‘SON’ is Yeshua, Jesus!
